The 20th century marks de beginning of what we refer today as Modern Medicine, which gave the basis for the development of Fetal Medicine. This is how the conception of the fetus as a mystic entity transforms to the concept of the fetus as a patient, a more biological and rational point of view.
The first steps towards the development of fetal medicine was to determine the normal patterns of fetal growth and development, in order to identify pathological conditions of this process, which finally leads to the diagnosis of intrauterine growth
restriction (IUGR).
The present review mentions the diverse ethiologies of this clinical condition and the addecuate way to diagnostics, in order to understand the fetus as a patient.
