Variaciones epidemiológicas en el Servicio de Otorrinolaringología del Hospital Clínico de la Universidad de Chile y su influencia en la docencia de postgrado*

To evaluate in the Otolaryngology Service of the Clínical Hospital of University of Chile {HCUCH) the occurrence of surgical procedures in order to establish if the proportion of most complex surgical procedures diminished in association with the increase of consultations and surgeries between 1990 and 2003. To determine if there hove been epidemiological changes in the type of procedures. To analyze if the present number of operations was enough to capacitate postgraduate students in otolaryngology residency programs. And if this situations affect teaching quality.
We analyzed surgical procedures and consultations performed during 1990, 1999 and 2003. Operations were classified accord to their complexity (1999 and 2003). To evaluate mínimum of procedures required for the training program we compared HCUCH's data with other national and international requirements .
Consults augmented in 53% and surgeries in 148% (1990-2003). This hasn't influenced negative/y the
amount of surgical procedures of middle and high complexity. Sorne surgeries hove diminished, others hove increased, and new techniques hove appeared.
The number of operations performed by residents in HCUCH during last year was above mínimum
requirements.
Changes detected induce to reassess residency programs and contemporary operative code classification. Although· students perform a suitable number of procedures, this can't ensure teaching quality neither residents would achieve autonomy during training program.
