Classical moral virtues and ethical behavior in medical performance have been defined from the physician's perspective and are considered by patients as the mínimum standard of desirables attributes in doctors. This transversal assessment searched desirable attributes looked in their care physicians by the patients in an ambulatory setting. One hundred and 4 patients with benign surgical problems were interviewed during july 2001. The age of physician was defined as very important by 56% and among them 90% would prefer their doctor in the range 35-50 years old. More than 95% consider as very important self confidence and communication skills.
Personal care is considered as very important by 83 % of patients. Lesser importance is attributed to sympathy and punctuality. Patients give more importance to qualitative communication attributes that matter in the patient-physician relationship.
