Abstract

Hysteroscopy is a procedure with a therapeutic and diagnostic purpose, permitting a direct vision of the uterine cavity. It is relatively simple but not exempt of complications; world literature reports figures are variable from 0.95 to 25%. We accomplished a retrospective study of the hysteroscopic procedures realized between May 1 2000 and july 31 2001 in the Obstetrics and Gynecology service of the Clinical Hospital of the University of Chile. In each patient we registered the age, parities, uterine pathology that justified the procedure, operation practiced, and complications. We carried out 120 hysteroscopic procedures in the defined period, finding 3 uterine perforations as the only complication found, which corresponds to 2.5% of the total, a figure that agrees with the world literature. The authors conclude that the hysteroscopy constitutes a good diagnosis and treatment method for intrauterine pathology, because of it's low invasive nature and of high-performance, low cost, speed, however it's not exempt of risks, and requires an adequate training.
