High blood pressure (HBP) is a condition of a high prevalence in the general population and it is related directly with mu/tiple conditions that are frecuently seen in the Emergency Service. Guidelines have been developped for its acute management, but still not always done properly.
We studied retrospectively the incidence of hypertension ( defined as systolic blood pressure > 160 andlor diastolic blood pressure > 100 mmHg) in the Emergency Service of the Hospital Clínico Universidad de Chile, from 1" january to 30'" june 2000. The age, gender, blood pressure (in groups of finding, emergency and urgency high pressure levels) and cardiac rate, diagnosis and treatment of each patient were evaluated.
The results allows us to conclude that HBP is a .frequent condition in our Emergency Service. A high percentage corresponds to findings that does not require acute treatment.
There still having a considerable use of short action Nifedipine even thou its use is not currently recommended.
