Tamoxifen has proven to play an important role in adjuvant breast cancer therapy.
First used as an antiestrogen, further investigations demonstrated that tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), that means tamoxifen has estrogen-like activity in sorne tissues and antiestrogenic activity in others.
lnitially used in advanced breast cancer as a palliative therapy. tamoxifon proved ro have significant benefit actions in the adjuvant therapy in invasive and in situ breast cancer.
lt also has been proven to play an important preventive role in women with high breast cancer risk.
In this review we analysed the role of tamoxifen in the breast cancer therapy, its benefit actions on bone and cardiovascular system and adverse effects on endometrium.
