This is a review of recent communications on pre-biotics (carbohydrates, proteins, fiber and other substrates of intestinal microflora) and pro-biotics (different species of microorganism), that are the purpose of this revision.
The most studied hove been specially Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, Bifidobacterium and the fungus Saccharomyces.
lt is apparent that the most clear effects have been: survival in the intestine, adherence to intestinal epithelium, prevention and shortening of duration of postantibiotic diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile (with Saccharornyces), and a/so shortening of Rotavirus diarrhea.
Other possible beneficial effects, in fitnctional inflanimatory or neoplastic intestinal conditions are also mentioned.
