Many chemotherapy drugs are active in breast cancer they are useful in adjuvant, neoadjuvant setting and for treatment of advanced, metastatic disease. Adjuvant chemotherapy is indicated far patients with breast-localized disense, with or without axillary compromise, which has been fully resected. The purpose is to prevent the re-growth of latent malignant cells in primary location or in distant organs. Therapeutical indication must be based on a multiple factor decision.
Neoadjuvant chemotherapy has changed prognostic far locally advanced breast cancer. lt allow early beginning of a systemic therapy, to decrease border extension of surgica/ resection and allow assessing response to therapy as "in vivo" test. In neoadjuvant setting, around 80% of patients get a reduction bigger than 50% of breast tumor and, or axillary tumor size.
The therapy goal in metastatic disease is palliation of disease symptoms and prolongs survival, and even disease is notcurable with conventional therapy, a small percentage of patientJ 2 to 10% can obtain a complete response that is maintained along the time.
