Abstract

Objectives: To characterize the histopathological reports of vulvar biopsies at the Department of Pathology, Clinical Hospital of the University of Chile (HCUCH) between 2020 and 2024 and to analyse their association with patient age and requesting clinical diagnosis. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study of 175 vulvar biopsy reports from Clinical Hospital University of Chile was performed. Clinical (age, requesting service) and histopathological (final diagnosis) variables were analysed. Associations were evaluated using χ² and Student’s t-tests; Logistic regression models examined associations between age with malignant lesions, vulvar intraepitelial neoplasia and lichen sclerosis’s Results: The mean patient age was 54.6 ± 15.4 years. Inflammatory lesions were the most common (45.7%), followed by benign tumors (20.6%). Increasing age was significantly associated with malignant lesions (5.2%) and lichen sclerosus (3.4%). Most biopsies were requested by Gynaecology Unit (78.9%) and Dermatology (10.9%) services. Conclusion: Inflammatory dermatoses are the primary indication for vulvar biopsy. Age is a significant predictor of malignancy and lichen sclerosus, underscoring the importance of screening strategies and integrated diagnostic protocols to enhance clinicopathological correlation and early detection.
