Since 1990, new viruses that are responsible for hepatitis have been described, and until now have been catalogued as not A-not B. The Hepatitis E virus was described as an enteric transmission virus that was responsible for outbreaks in Asia and Mexico, which were documented retrospectively. lt is an RNA virus, in the
Caliciviridae family, which produces a similar disease to that of the Hepatitis A virus and does not produce either chronic infection or carriers. Since 1995, molecular genetics techniques have identified new viruses that are theoretically responsible far post-transfusion hepatitis, such as the Hepatitis G virus and the TT virus. However, there is still uncertainty regarding their true pathogenic role.
