Medical Informatics is a developing body of knowiedge and set of techniques concerningthe organization and
management of information in support of medical research, education, and patient care. Medica/ informatics
combines medical science with several technoiogies and disciplines in the information and computer sciences
and provides methodoiogies by which these can contribute to better use of medical knowiedge bases and ultimately to better medical care.
The computer is rapidly becoming an interactive workstation for medical research and for ciinicai decisionmaking
and it has become a preferred instrument for communication and documentation throughout heaith care.
In recent years, medical informatics has become a wellrecognized branch of medicine.
lt is a multidisciplinary science that combines information technoiogy and various specialties of medicine. The impact of medical informatics on health administration, ciinical practice, medical education is advancing aiong with the rapid deveiopments in computer science. Departments of medical informatics or similar divisions have appeared in hospitais, medical centers and schools of medicine. Network concepts, operating systems, word processing, database and data processing, computer media resources, multimedia computer statistics, inteligent health information systems, medical diagnostic support systems, telemedicine, virtual reality and eiectronic medical record systems, are now accepted everywhere.
