This article seeks, on one hand, to define basic concepts anti to summarize what is the Geriatrics today, such and like as the specialists conceive it. For other, to sketch sorne of the many possible encounter points with the whole social and health team, since the chore in Geriatrics is, by definition, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary, of fering specific and professional answers to the special health problems of the old persons, in the context of what is known as Integral Geriatric Attention.
Also, it shoivs sorne short social - demografic data that justify anti by themselves the existence of this speciality in our country, that is living a slow hut sustainetl transition process
to growing old.
