Severe infections associated to Streptococcus pyogenes have emerged in Chile. We present a series of 5 patients admitted to our Hospital during 1999. All of them had bacteremia and associated morbid factors . Three patients evolved with shock, and 2 of them presented the Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. Three patients had cutaneous rnanifestations and 2 had clotting disturbances. All patients presented high white cell counts (16800 /mm3 on average) and higher C reactive protein values (mean 300 mg/L) . Band cells percentages and
erithrosedimentation rates were variables and some patients had normal values. Four patients underwent surgical interventions and 3 patients received intravenous gammaglobulin.
Three patients died in this group and survivors had a prolonged hospitalization beyond one mouth. All bacterial isolates harbored the speA superantigen-codifying gene.
