Fever of unknown origin (FUO), is defined as a febrile illness of more than 3 weeks duration, fever of 38,3° C or
higher on at least 3 occasions, and uncertain diagnosis after one week of inhospital diagnosis workup. New classifications have been created because of the progress on diagnosis techniques and the need of having different approaches to address specific groups as HIV (+) and neutropenic patients. New series show an increased number of patients with FUO that remain without diagnosis, showing up to 25%.
lt does not seem convenient to use general algorithms and all examinations must be guided by a clinical orientation anda mínimum laboratory screening.
