Tobacco is a very common habit in our society, and a great problem in public health. Nowadays cigarette smoking remains the most important preventable cause of premature death, disability, unnecessary health expense and is involved in 20% of the general mortality and in different pathologic states such as lung and laryngeal cancer, peripheric, coronary and brain vascular disease, COPD, perinatal morbility and so on.
The control of tobacco is highly difficult. From all the people who try to abandon every year, just a few of them succeed in quitting in the long term due to the addictive power of nicotine ant the strong symptoms of privation syndrome.
The role of the physician in the control of tobacco is over important. There are different tools to avoid the addiction: medical advice, p sychological support and specific method such as burping or nicotine replacement therapy like patch.
