Abstract

Congenital malformations (CM) influence the infant -mortality (IM). With the objective of knowing the importance of CM in the IM in Chile in 1996, in the Vital Statistics, we revised the death causes in infant with less than one year old, according to International Diseases Classification. There was an IM of 11.1 0/00, a neonatal mortality of 6.3 0/00 live birth, a nearly neonatal mortality 4.8 0/00 and a late infant -mortality of 4.8 0/00. 30.6% expired by CM, IM rate due to CM was of 3.4 0/00. 50.2% expired in the first week of life and 63.3% before 28 days. The mortality by CM does not defer by sexes (p> 0.05), the mortality is superior in male in CM of the urinary tract and respiratory system (p= 0.049 and p= 0.0072). Anencephaly, anomalies of the respiratory system, urinary tract, expire before seven days of life (p< 0.001). СM more frequent: cardiovascular system (28.7%), nervous system (17.5%). Additional reduction in the neonatal mortality will depend on the genetic advice and on the prevention of the congenital malformations.
