Neonatal morbidity was studied during 1996 and 1997 at the neonatal unit of Hospital Clínico Universidad de Chile.
Neonatal mortdlity analysis is presented in another paper. The morbidity data belong to 1231 newborn discharges from 4827 deliveries registered during this period. General deliveries data are present.
The principal causes of morbidity registered were jaundice syndrome (40.2%), hypoglycemia (9.8%), prematurity birth (8.8%) respiratory distress syndrome (5.4%), haemolytic anemia (5.1%), neonatal infection (4.8%). Severe infection disease in present in 7.3% of the newborn. The hospital stay length average isis 6.6 days. The group of newborn more than 3000g had 62,7% of discharges with 2.9 days stay length, on the other hand, the group of newborn less than 1500g with 8.0% of discharges has a average of 42.2 days stay length.
A morbidity classification methodology with clinical point of view is present in order to be easy understood and comparable to data from another neonatal unit.
