In the menopausal women the advantages of the estrogen therapy are undebatable especially when it comes to
the osseous and cardiovascular system. The inconvenience is that they are associated with a moderate increase in the relative risk of developrug breast and endometrial cancer. This paper reviews the new generation of estrogens known as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMS). The SERMS have a selective estrogenic effect on specific target organs and do not act on the reproductive system. We analyze its mechanism of action, its clinical value and the future perspectives of this new product.
