Until recently there was no specific therapy for ischemic stroke, but during the last thirty years, thrombolysis has become new field of investigation oriented to provide specific treatment for this pathological entity. Currently thrombolysis constitutes the only terapeutic alternative in selected cases of stroke. This article reviews literature concerning fibrinolysis as a treatment for ischemic stroke and gives a therapeutic criterion profile with today's
available drugs. There is enough scientific evidence supporting the recommendations given in this article.
