Abstract

Hip fractures constitute a relevant clinical entity with a worldwide incidence estimated for the year 1990 of 1.6 million. The mayor prevalence of this pathology is related to old age, establishing a great impact on public health due to its costs, its high rates of morbidity and the inherent mortality risk ( 14 to 36°/o according to different se ries). Population growth, availed by demographic studies, reveals an unavoidable aging process; therefore, in the future we should expect that the frequency of this pathology will increase, estimating a global incidence of 6.26 million hip fractures for the year 2050. For this reason doctors should be familiarized with this illness to respond future demands. In this review, the most important aspects of clinical management have been analyzed, such as anatomic considerations, risk factors, classification and treatment, emphasizing on predictive factors so as to be able to prevent this pathology.
