The artificial chromosomes are structures constructed by genetic engineering, which contribute to improve the genome studies and better knowledge of chromosome functioning; they are also good candidadates for gene transfer methods in gene therapy. The first developed were the yeast artifical chromosomes (YAC), which have been used in genes libraries confection. More recently, the first generation of human artificial chromosomes have been obtained. They have a good nuclear stability through sucessive generations.
