The direct lateral approach to the hip, consists in an approximation to the articular capsule, through a longitudinal incision described over the greater trochanter of the f emur, through the fascia lata, and the splitting of the gluteus medius and vastus lateralis for their anterior retraction.
This technique may cause a neurological damage to the superior gluteal nerve, which inervates the abductor muscles of the thigth. Our purpose is to emphasize the anatomical reasons to the posibility of a nerve injury.
