63 patients with early squamous cell carcinoma of the vocal cords were treated between 1980-1995. 14% were carcinoma in situ: 67 % were Tl and 19% T2.
All the carcinoma in situ were irradiated, and it was found that there was one recurrence and one second primary tumor. Patients with Tl and T2 were treated with surgery or radiotherapy. ln the irradiated group (35) there were 3 recurrences, 2 of them were controlled with total laryngectomy. Three patients died. In the operated group (19 frontolateral laryngectomies) there were one recurrence and no deaths.
The actual overall survival rate ofTJ and T2 was 94% after 5 years. On using radiotherapy the survival rate was 91,5% and those operated it was 100%.
