Abstract

High blood pressure {HBP] is a pathology of high prevalence in the general population, relatad to affections of frequent ottention in emergency services. A study was done in the Emergency Deportment of the Universidad de Chile Clinical Hospital during 2002 in which we retrospectivaly evaluated the forms of presentation of HBP and their handling in urgency. The definitions of hypertensive emergencias and urgencias were those contained in the Sixth Report of HBP, considering an hypertensive finding, levels of blood pressure above 160/100 mm Hg that did not correspond to these. In this study we detected misdoings related to the diagnosis and treatment of the different forms of presentatlon of HBP, and we suggested a behavioral change. A new study was designed to evaluate if any changes on management on HBP were done after the f irst publication. The results show that on a similar population, the hypertensive urgencies were not treated immediately, the use of short action nifedipine diminished from 35% fo 8%, and the hypertensive findings that received treatment maintained around 20%. lf is possible to conclude that an adequate change in the handling of HBP in the emergency departmenf existed later to the publication of our first study.
