This paper describes the physiopathological and clínical basis of oral anticoagulant treatment. Thrombosis is an important complication of various clinical conditions and can be prevented by anticoagulant agents. The mechanism of actions on vitamin K metabolism, therapeutic recommendations, assigns a grade of anticoagulation far each clínical conditíon and oral anticoagulants that are available in Chile are discussed. Also are described pre analytical conditions and processing of blood specimans far prothrombin time test. This test is used as a monitor of the effects of oral anticoagulant therapy.
