Abstract

Fractures of the hip in elderly patients have a significant marhility and mortality rate, Our main objective was to study some factors that could affect the postoperative outcome producing some complications. We made a retrospeсtive study, including all the patients with a hip fracture treated at the Orthopaedic Surgery Division of the University of Chile Hospital, between 1995 and 1998. One hundred and forty seven patients were included, most of them females (84%), with and average age of 79 years. Some preexisting medical condition was found in 80% and the intertrochanteric type was the most common hip fracture. An operative delay of 6 days was found. Local complications like wound and implant infection occurred in 12 patients (8%) and systemic complications in 35%. Postoperative morbility was related with the age of the pаtient and the preexisting medical conditions and not with the operative delay. These results indicate that preoperative patient conditions have a great effect on outcome and prognosis.
